Our comparison methodology
Five criteria that actually matter day to day
Each comparison assesses providers on eleven criteria; five of them really matter in a merchant's daily life.
- Full pricingCommission rates and fixed fees per transaction, but also currency conversion, dispute and refund fees, often missing from homepages.
- Accepted sectorsThose genuinely accepted, based on each player's published terms of service rather than sales promises.
- KYC and opening timeThe documents required and the real account opening time.
- Payouts and holdsPayout frequency and any security holds.
- SupportLanguage, hours, dedicated contact or generic queue.
The data comes from public price lists and terms of service, checked at the date shown on each comparison page.
A publisher that says when a competitor is the better fit
Let us be transparent about one thing: Bridge Pay publishes these comparisons. We do not claim the neutrality of an independent body, which is precisely why we hold ourselves to a simple rule: say when the competitor is the better choice. Stripe remains superior for a standard SaaS that wants the best APIs on the market; Adyen is built for very high-volume enterprise accounts; Square excels in US physical retail. Our ground is the sectors these players refuse or terminate. Each "vs" page therefore explicitly lists the cases where we recommend the other solution, because a well-advised merchant costs us less than a disappointed customer.
How to choose your payment provider
To choose, follow these four steps in order.
- The eliminatory questionIs your activity contractually accepted by the provider? An attractive rate is worthless if the account gets suspended in month three with funds on hold.
- The total costCompute it on your real volume (rate, fixed fees, conversion, holds) rather than comparing headline rates; our fee calculator was built for that.
- SupportTest it before signing: one technical question sent by email says a lot about the response times you will face later.
- The clausesRead the rolling reserve and termination clauses: that is where the real differences between providers hide, far more than in tenths of a point of commission.
